IN CONVERSATION: YONA HARVEY (Shastra Deo moderator)

Yona Harvey is an award-winning African American poet, literary artist and contributing writer to Marvel Comics’ best-selling Black Panther series, making her one of the first black women ever to have written for Marvel. Recipient of a Kate Tufts Discovery Award (for her debut collection Hemming the Water) and a Barbara Deming Award for feminists in the arts, Harvey lives in Pennsylvania, where she teaches poetry at the University of Pittsburgh and facilitates nonfiction workshops for adolescents writing about mental illness.

Shastra Deo is an award -winning Brisbane based Poet. Her first book, The Agonist (UQP 2017), was shortlisted for the 2018 Mary Gilmore Award and ALS Gold Medal, commended for the 2017 Anne Elder Award, and won the 2016 Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize.

In this conversation with QPF’s 2018 Poet-in-Residence we honour the vital relationship between truth and doubt, and explore poetry’s role in the healing process.
